Ray J Day

The originator of the nickname - California Soul City

He also came up with Ray J's Super Lifty Top Fifty. That one never stuck....... I wonder why?

Ray J Day

Ray at home in Luton in 1970. On the shelves to the left some of his vast collection of vinyl. Please note the little sticky out bits of paper, all part of his indexing system

Ray was a regular at the California in the early 70s having previously worked at the Mecca in Bristol. Whilst there he worked on "Free Radio Britain", a land based pirate station, where he had a highly rated Motown and Soul show. He was one of the few British DJs to be on the Motown list, receiving regular pre-release promo discs from them.

Moving to Bedfordshire in 1971, Ray became part of the Benson stable and also worked for "Scene Around" doing many gigs across the South of England.  These included the "Sundown" circuit and some of the London venues such as  the Hammersmith Odeon where he introduced Genesis. Other frequent venues locally included the Queensway Hall, Truman Gateway, Aquarius, Luton Recreation Centre, Caesar's Palace and the College.

He still does the occasional gig and now lives in Cornwall.
