I well remember one evening back in the early seventies being asked to help out in the cloakroom as somebody hadn't turned up. The Ballroom was open but hardly anyone had arrived as it was still quite early. I was checking out the ticket book when a voice said "Excuse me, is the manager around?". I looked up to be confronted by a vision in make-up.

It eventually transpired that Sweet had broken down on the M1 and that they'd managed to flag down a passing taxi, so that one of them could get to the Cali and call for help. I tracked down Mick Ilka who went out to get the rest of them in his Jeep. No limos for the stars in those days. They had an old Ford Transit.
